Taylor Russell McKenzie was conceived in Vancouver, British Columbia on July 18th, 1994. She also grew up in Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal. Russell was the daughter of a black dad and a white mom. She grew up mostly with her mom's family. She recalled that growing up she was rejected by her peers due to the complexion of her skin. They struggled financially. They were always on the move and moved sixteen times in an attempt to assist her father's career. Despite all this, Russell mentioned how in her younger years "there was always an opportunity for reinventing yourself, creating something new."As a child, Russell was already artistically inclined. At first, she desired to pursue a profession in ballet. Later, she wanted to be an artist. It was when she was 18 that she began her first class in acting. She saved money from work to purchase an automobile and drove to Los Angeles to audition. Once her money was gone then she would go back home to work until she made enough money to go back to the audition. She continued this routine for four more years until she was offered her first television role.
